Nepali Everest Explorer Deluxe Extra Large

There’s something magical about holding a journal that carries the weight of history in your hands. Our Everest Explorer Heritage Deluxe Edition isn’t just a notebook—it’s a connection to a 1,000-year-old tradition of papermaking that has survived empires, revolutions, and the passage of time itself.

A Living Heritage from the Himalayas

Nestled in the high-altitude valleys of Nepal, where the air is thin and the mountains brush the sky, artisans continue a craft passed down through generations. The Lokta paper used in every Everest Explorer journal comes from the Lokta bush, which grows naturally in the Himalayan Mountains. It’s handmade, one sheet at a time, using methods that have remained virtually unchanged for centuries.

The oldest surviving Lokta paper artifact is a copy of the Karanya Buha Sutra Buddhist text, estimated to be between 1,000 and 1,900 years old. Today, this same paper is still used for official Nepali government documents—a testament to its durability and quality.

Craftsmanship That Tells a Story

The Paper

Each journal contains 96 heavyweight pages (200gsm) of extra-thick, natural Lokta paper with beautiful deckle edges. That means 192 writing surfaces—front and back. Lokta paper is created by:

  • Cooking strips of inner Lokta bark in vats to create a pulpy mash
  • Spreading the pulp by hand over boxed screens
  • Setting it to dry in the Himalayan sunshine

This process creates a soft yet tough paper with a special texture that makes each sheet truly unique. For this journal we use the Washi (Japanese) method to create smoother sides on both faces of the paper, giving you a premium writing experience.

The Cover

Our vintage water buffalo leather cover is vegetable-tanned using black walnut husks, creating a finish that’s unique to each journal. No two covers look exactly alike—just like no two Lokta paper sheets are identical. This rugged leather journal is built for adventure, ready to accompany you through mountains, cities, and everything in between.

Sustainable by Nature

Lokta bushes quickly regrow after being cut, providing a renewable source for this extraordinary paper. By choosing the Everest Explorer Heritage Deluxe Edition, you’re supporting a tradition that respects both the environment and the artisans who have kept it alive for millennia.
